Some media have reported that four out of five bottles of Italian olive oil were adulterated with lower quality oil from other Mediterranean countries, according to a People's Daily report.

There's a revolution taking place in the eastern Mediterranean and it's all about oil ... olive oil.

A decade after planting tens of millions of trees, Turkey expects next year to become the world's second largest producer of olive oil, surpassing Italy, Greece, Tunisia and Syria, and cater to the growing market in the Far East.

"We have increased the number of trees in past 10 years from 90 million to about double that and so we are expecting an increase in production and in the very near future to be the number one producer of table olives and number two producer of olive oil in the world," Metin Olken, deputy chairman of the Turkish Olive and Olive Oil Publicity Committee, told The Media Line.

Oliveitup, the promotional campaign launched by the Consortium of Guarantee of Quality Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVC) for the promotion of premium European olive oil in India has completed its first year.

The three year campaign is financed by the European Union, in collaboration with Italy.

Spanish producer of Mediterranean food products, Borges, has roped in Law & Kenneth to look after the creative duties of its entire product portfolio in India. The account will be handled from the agency's Delhi office. It has been learnt that the development is a result of a multi-agency pitch that was initiated last month. The size of the account is estimated arounf $2.7 million

China is taking a great leap forward with its olive and olive oil production and Spain is being urged to get onboard or see Italy or Israel take the lead.

The Chinese Government is reported to be planning a 500 percent increase in its current 33,000-40,000 hectares of olive groves in the next five years with the plantation of 160,000 hectares in the Himalayas, close to Tibet.

India's import of olive oil in the 2010 calender year rose by almost 60% to about 4,187 tonne on the back of increase in consumption, according to an industry body.

The country had imported 2,617 tonne in the corresponding period of the previous year, Indian Olive Association said in a statement.

India has signaled its interest to buy pulses, olive oil and fertilizer from Morocco, said a Reuters report citing India's food minister KV Thomas.

The food minister met with Moroccan Foreign Trade Minister Abdellatif Maazous in New Delhi. The Moroccan minister wants wheat and rice from India.

Spain continues to dominate the Chinese olive oil market as an optimistic report shows that in 2009 Spanish producers exported more than 10 million kilos of olive oil to the Asian giant. This represents significant control in an emerging market - the Olive Oil Times is reporting.

The study found that, while consumers can choose among some 86 different brands of olive oil in China, only seven have a consistent presence in the market and four of these seven olive oil brands are of Spanish origin.
