 China's watchdog calls for better-quality Italian olive oil

wantchinatimes.jpgChina's quality watchdog has ordered local inspection and quarantine organs to thoroughly investigate olive oil imported from Italy to ensure the quality of the oil

Some media have reported that four out of five bottles of Italian olive oil were adulterated with lower quality oil from other Mediterranean countries, according to a People's Daily report.

 Olive Oil Production in China Grows, But Not Like Imports

China is taking a great leap forward with its olive and olive oil production and Spain is being urged to get onboard or see Italy or Israel take the lead.

The Chinese Government is reported to be planning a 500 percent increase in its current 33,000-40,000 hectares of olive groves in the next five years with the plantation of 160,000 hectares in the Himalayas, close to Tibet.

 Portugal Olive Oil in China

expo2010.jpgPortugal, the world's sixth largest wine producer and a major olive oil exporter, held a promotional event on October 19th 2010 at the Royal Meridien Hotel in Shanghai. The country's food exporters displayed wines and olive oil in the food show. You can see some photos here.

 Spanish Olive Oil Continues Push into China

Spain continues to dominate the Chinese olive oil market as an optimistic report shows that in 2009 Spanish producers exported more than 10 million kilos of olive oil to the Asian giant. This represents significant control in an emerging market - the Olive Oil Times is reporting.

The study found that, while consumers can choose among some 86 different brands of olive oil in China, only seven have a consistent presence in the market and four of these seven olive oil brands are of Spanish origin.

 China Daily report on olive oil demand in China

chinadaily.jpgKondor SA Beijing, the Chinese branch of Kondor, one of the largest food and beverage distributors in Greece, is betting big on the China market to to stimulate demand for Greek olive oil, China Daily is reporting.

China imported 8,017 tons of olive oil in 2007, up from 393 tons in 200. Currently, around 50 companies export Greek olive oil to China.
